グレート・ブリテンおよび北アイルランド連合王国[1] （グレート・ブリテンおよびきたアイルランドれんごうおうこく）、いわゆるイギリスは、イングランド、スコットランド、ウェールズ、北アイルランドから構成されている。イギリス連邦王国の一国。主な通称は、英国（えいこく）、連合王国（れんごうおうこく）、ブリテンなど。通称の「イギリス」のもとになっているのはポルトガル語のInglez。英吉利と当て字される。 本項では、特記以外は「グレート・ブリテンおよび北アイルランド連合王国」の意味で「イギリス」を使用する。 現在、国際連合安全保障理事会常任理事国の一つであり、ヨーロッパ北西部の島国。大航海時代を経て、世界屈指の海洋国家として成長。西欧列強のひとつとして世界に植民地を拡大し、世界最大の奴隷貿易国となった。公用語である英語は実質上世界共通語としての機能を果たしており、世界に10億人といわれる英語人口とイギリス連邦諸国を中心にアメリカやカナダ、インドやオーストラリアなど広大な英語圏を形成している。第一次世界大戦以降の勢力均衡中心の時代にあっては名誉あるバランサーを標榜し、自国と自国の交易上、友好関係にある国々、地域、植民地の経済と安全保障の安定化に向けた世界戦略を展開したことで、パックスブリタニカと呼ばれる比較的平和な時代をもたらした。国家体制は国王を国家元首とし、議院内閣制に基づく立憲君主制である。しばしば、老大国と称される。 駐日英国大使館は、東京都千代田区にある。
